About this program

The Municipality of York, Maine administers a General Assistance Program for the support of the poor. Pursuant to Title 22 MRSA (4305), the municipal officers have adopted the ordinance establishing the program. If you are in need of financial assistance you may call or text (207) 337-1867 at any time. Messages will be returned during normal business hours. In the event of an emergency please call the York Police Department at 363-4444. Those wishing to apply for General Assistance may do so on the second floor of the York Town Hall; Monday and Thursday between the hours of 8:30 AM - 10:30 AM. The General Assistance Director must issue a written decision within 24 hours of receiving an application
Services offered
Assistance for basic necessities such as Food, clothing, shelter, fuel, electricity, non-elective essential medical services as prescribed by a physician, nonprescription drugs, basic telephone service where it is necessary for medical reasons, property taxes when a tax lien placed on the property threatens the loss of the applicant’s place of residence
