The Salvation Army Topeka

The Salvation Army began in Topeka in September of 1886. The first recorded commander was Lt. King, assisted by Cadet Thomoson. The first recorded address was 409 E. 3rd Street. In 1897, the Topeka police asked Capt. Hawk if they could assist with the many sick people in the town, and Capt. Hawk obtained permission to rent a few rooms at a hospital. In 1919, plans were created for a campaign to erect a three-story building for a citadel, as a memorial to the ex-service men of World War I and of “Mother” Florence, who spent many years of service in The Salvation Army of Topeka. The building was finished at a cost of $65,000 to house all departments of the Army’s work at 5th and Quincy. In 1966, a tornado hit the city, cutting a swath seven miles long, killing 17 people and causing more than $100 million in damage. Along with other damage, the roof of The Salvation Army building was torn off, but no one inside was hurt. Immediately after the storm passed, the canteen was rushed into service and was the first relief unit operating in the area. Calls went out to 11 surrounding communities and scores of people responded to give physical and spiritual aid. A command post was authorized and the Army’s corps building was used as a shelter and feeding station. Clothing and furniture distribution centers were set up in six places. After just 11 days, Salvation Army workers had provided 20,400 service hours and 140,000 meals. Disaster relief continues to be a hallmark of The Salvation Army, Topeka, to this day.
