Nearly 100% of the people we come to ICAN Housing Solutions for help are literally homeless. They are living on the street, in a vacant house, a car or some other place not meant for human habitation. Others are in an emergency shelter, where they can stay up to 90 days. They have 90 days to find a home they can afford. The actual wait is much longer. We received approximately 550 applications for housing in the last 12 months. Permanent Supportive Housing is much more than a key to an apartment. Housing is not the end goal. It is a milestone. It is a place where our tenants can shift their energy from survival to stability. We have some residents who have been with us for 25 years. We have people who just moved in and are taking their first steps toward recovery. ICAN Housing Solutions helps persons with psychiatric disabilities obtain housing in order to live independently and advance in their personal recovery. The agency's goal is to develop permanent supportive housing for persons with mental disabilities to end their homelessness. ICAN's Outreach Department helps consumers obtain the essentials of life, including food, shelter, clothing, emergency loans while linking them to community mental health and social services. ICAN’s Housing Departments include Property Management, Maintenance and Development. ICAN owns and operates 132 rental units as well as provides various rent subsidy programs. Tenant rents including utilities are capped at 40% of household income. Housing Support Specialists assist residents to maintain and retain their homes. Additional recovery supports include a drop in center, transportation and partnerships with existing vocational programs.
