About this program

Emergency Assistance has always been the program of priority since Human Services was founded in 1955. In 2006, the Board of Directors revised the criteria and Emergency Assistance became a matching program. The purpose of the Emergency Assistance Program is to help individuals and families experiencing financial hardship. It is not designed to be a permanent source of household funding but rather help when the client cannot find other alternatives and they are facing a “life altering” crisis. To be eligible, the individual or head of household must live within the Canal Winchester School District. They will need to make a written request listing the assistance they are seeking. Those needing help with rent must include lease or mortgage payment information including the landlord or mortgager’s name, address, phone, account number if applicable, amount of the monthly payment and the amount that the client is currently past due. Those seeking utility assistance must include a copy of their past due bill. If the client meets the eligibility requirements, Human Services will then match the payment made by the client up to, but not to exceed, $250.00, depending on the circumstance. In addition, $250.00 is the maximum assistance that can be provided to any client within a twelve month period. To apply for Emergency Assistance, you must send a written request to: Canal Winchester Human Services, 22 South Trine Street, Canal Winchester, Ohio 43110. Included in your letter, please indicate your need. If you are asking for rent/mortgage assistance, you must include either a copy of your lease or a mortgage bill which lists the landlords' or mortgage holder's name, address and phone number. Indicate your monthly obligation and the amount you are past due. If you are requesting assistance for a utility, you must enclose a copy of the past due or disconnect notice which includes your name and address, and the name and address of the utility along with a balance due.
