About this program

General Assistance (GA) is a program that provides assistance to adults who are not receiving, or do not qualify for other cash programs administered by the Department of Human Services(DHS) more commonly known as Public Aid. GA provides monthly assistance for basic living needs such as utilites, shelter, food, personal essentials and medical care. Individuals or families with dependant children are referred to DHS for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). An applicant is not eligible for GA if the applicant has been denied benefits from other agencies because of non-cooperation, suspension, sanction, receipt of a lump sum payment or expiration of life time limits from TANF. Other eligibility factors such as citizenship, residency, violation of parole or probation, drug felonies, etc are also factors in determining eligibilty as mandated by the State of Illinois. Due to each applicant's circumstances eligiblity may vary from case to case. Individuals interested in applying for GA should call or come in for an application.
